- Here's my supplies. The rack was $2, the pot was $3. I had the dirt already.
- Getting ready to cut the hole. I was going to use the peanut butter lid as a guide but felt it was too big to use. So I used a glass jar as a guide.
- Traced the line with my trusty Sharpie and here's the hole. A lot of the other sites suggest using screen or lawn cloth. Not having any of that and not wanting to buy a whole roll for a 2/2 inch square I used the old stand by of coffee filters.
- This was the first design, a criss-cross cut, but then I realized it would be rough on the plant forcing it though there.
- This is what I ended up using.
- I pulled the tomatoes out of the pot I had been growing them in and cleaned up the root ball.
- The roots are about halfway through the hole.
- All the way in now.You can see the root ball with the coffee filter around it.
- Turned over for the first time.
- And there it is. I put another plant in the top to help hold it all together.

I started to put in one plant, and as these things go, I started adding more. Then I heard about something called the Topsy Turvy Upside Down Tomato, Flower and Vegetable Planter. A neat idea, but it wasn't worth the $20. I started looking around the web and found information on how to make it yourself. I live by the saying "Give the hardest job to the laziest man and he'll find the easiest way to do it". So here's what I do. It cost me a total of $7.00 and about 2 hours of time. |
